Metro Green Line

The Metro Green Line, opening in 1995, was Los Angeles's second light rail line. This line connects the cities of Manhattan Beach and Norwalk, running through the intermediate cities of El Segundo, Hawthorne, Lynwood, South Gate, and part of Los Angeles. Most of the Green Line operates in the median of the Century Freeway (I-105), although the western section between Redondo Beach and Aviation/LAX stations is on standard elevated trackage.

Plans for a transit line connecting the South Bay region with Norwalk originated as far back as 1972, when the plans for the Century Freeway were drawn up. As the freeway's construction had been opposed by many of the communities in its path, Caltrans left provision for a transit corridor in the median of the Century Freeway. Construction began in 1987, and the line was officially opened for business in 1995.

The Green Line was originally planned to connect the South Bay's booming Cold War industries with the bedroom communities of the Gateway Cities to the east. Unfortunately, by 1995, the Cold War had been long over, and such a transit line was not as useful as once had been projected. As a result, the Green Line's ridership has always been below expectations.

The Green Line originally was planned to connect with the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and provision was left for such an extension. However, opposition arose from the local communities in the area as well as LAX parking lot operators who were concerned that the Green Line would hurt their businesses. As a result, the connection was not built, although the two concrete ramp stubs that would have been the beginning of this extension can be seen west of Aviation/LAX station.

When the Green Line was originally opened, it used a fleet of P2020 cars built by Nippon-Sharyo identical to those used on the Blue Line. In 2000, the P2020s were transferred to the Blue Line and new Siemens P2000 vehicles began operating on the Green Line.
