Metro Red and Purple lines
Los Angeles's two Metro Rail subway lines are known as the Metro Red and Purple Lines. The Red Line connects North Hollywood with Union Station, and the Purple Line begins at Wilshire/Western and runs east to Union Station. Both lines operate on the same tracks between Union and Wilshire/Vermont stations.
The subway was opened in segments. The Red Line originally opened in 1993 between Union Station and Westlake/MacArthur Park. In 1996, it was extended to Wilshire/Western in Koreatown, and in 1999 a second branch was opened from Wilshire/Vermont station to Hollywood/Vine. The latest extension connected Hollywood/Vine with North Hollywood in 2000, and further plans have been made for a possible future extension of the Purple Line to Santa Monica.
The Metro Red and Purple lines were originally both denoted on maps as the "Metro Red Line", although the two branches were officially differentiated from each other in summer 2006. Both lines use the Breda A650 subway cars, first ordered in the early 1990s. A second order of A650s was subsequently delivered in 1998.
