MTA Bus Company

Here we have a typical MTA Bus Orion V CNG, currently boarding passengers on the Q25 route in central Flushing, Queens. This bus was originally a part of the Queens Surface fleet and was purchased by the MTA in 2005. It was later repainted into MTA Bus blue and white.
MTA Bus Company (commonly referred to as "MTA Bus", or shortened to "MTAB") is one of the divisions of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and one of the two major bus operators within New York City (the other being MTA New York City Transit.)

MTA Bus was created in late 2004 and was established to operate the routes of seven private bus companies (PBLs) that previously operated various bus routes in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn. The first private bus company to be taken over by MTA Bus was Liberty Lines Express, which previously operated express bus routes between the Bronx and Manhattan, on January 3, 2005. Queens Surface was the next to be taken over, on February 27, 2005, followed by New York Bus Service (July 1, 2005), Command Bus (December 5, 2005), Green Bus Lines (January 9, 2006), Jamaica Buses (January 30, 2006) and finally Triboro Coach on February 20, 2006.

Upon the takeover of each of these PBLs, MTAB inherited the bus fleet of each one. Therefore, the MTAB fleet at first was rather interesting, with the inherited buses from the PBLs still operating in their old liveries. However, some of the PBLs, especially Green Bus Lines and Triboro Coach, had rather old and dilapidated bus fleets and actions were taken to replace the worst buses as soon as possible. MTAB purchased a fleet of brand-new MCI D4500CL coaches for express service in early 2005, and these buses now provide the bulk of service for most of MTAB's express routes. The D4500CLs replaced the suburban MCI Classics that many PBLs had been operating on their express routes. A further order of Orion VII HEV buses started arriving in mid-2006, with the final buses arriving in 2007. These buses replaced most of the aging GMC and TMC RTS buses previously operating in local service. In addition to these new buses, some Orion V and TMC RTS buses were transferred from MTA New York City Transit to operate local service as well.

MTA Bus started testing several Orion VII "Next Generation" HEV buses in 2007, and is expected to receive a large order of these vehicles in the near future.

Today, MTAB operates over 1,250 buses on 83 routes out of 8 depots.
